Father Arrested After Accidentally Shooting 8-Year-Old Son While Trying To Demonstrate Gun Safety

(IBEXNews) - A Missouri father told police he was trying to teach children about gun safety when he accidentally shot his 8-year-old son, sending him to the hospital.
According to KMIZ in Jefferson City, Phillip D. Lumas Sr. was arrested and charged with second-degree domestic assault and child endangerment after the Tuesday morning shooting. Police say that Lumas was remorseful, and told them that after the demonstration, he started watching TV while unloading the gun, thinking the children were out of the room.
But as he was putting away the gun, he said, his son and another 6-year-old startled him, and the 9-mm. Ruger pistol went off. Lumas and his wife took their son to the hospital for his injuries, calling 911 on the way.
A police spokesperson didn’t have any updated information on the child’s condition. Lumas was released from custody without bond and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
Two days before the shooting, Lumas shared this image of his guns, seemingly including the Ruger 9mm pistol (right) that fired early Tuesday, hitting his son in the chest
