Brooklyn Preteen Awarded $43 Million in Lawsuit After Being Struck by School Bus

(IBEXNews) – An 11-year-old Brooklyn girl was awarded over $43 million Wednesday for the massive injuries she suffered after a school bus plowed into her.
“I’m happy everything worked out for my daughter,” her father, Tyrone Carbon, 35, of Crown Heights, told the Daily News moments after the Brooklyn Supreme Court jury’s verdict in a civil suit against the school that owns the bus and employed its driver.
“Nothing could ever have her back to the way she was, but this will help her live her life.”
The girl — whose name is being withheld because of her age — was crossing the street at Nostrand Ave. and St. John’s Pl. in 2017 when the bus owned by the United Lubavitcher Yeshiva school mowed her down.
She spent nearly a month in Maimonides Hospital’s intensive care unit for a slew of severe injuries, including two fractured femurs, damage to her lungs, and multiple pelvic and rib fractures, court documents show.
The tears to her urethra were so bad that they required extensive reconstructive surgery, and must now use a suprapubic catheter to drain urine from her bladder.
“Justice was done in the courtroom in Brooklyn today,” said attorney Sanford Rubenstein, who represented the girl along with her trial lawyers John Avanzino and Scott Rynecki. “But nothing will be able to put this child in the physical condition before this horrific accident. At least now she will get appropriate medical attention she will need for the rest of her life.”
The driver, Shneur Brownstein, violated a number of traffic rules including failure to yield to pedestrians, the suit says.
Carbon said he can’t wait to tell his now 13-year-old daughter about the outcome of the two-week trial.
“She doesn’t even know yet,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to telling her.”
