(IBEXNews) - An Oakland man died on New Year’s Eve after he tried to chase down a person who stole his laptop while he was working at a Starbucks.
According to police, the man — whose identity has not been made public — was in the coffee shop on Tuesday morning at around 11:30 when the suspect went up to him, grabbed his laptop, and ran off. The man gave chase, but as the suspect got away in a car, the victim suffered a severe head injury. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
The man’s name has not been released, but witnesses told ABC that he was young, in his 20s or 30s, and at least one witness saw a body lying in the street that had suffered some disturbing injuries.
“He was bleeding only from the head. His face was purple and blue. Fortunately someone tried to do first aid to help him,” said Maria Chan, a florist who runs a shop across the street.
Police haven’t explained how the man was hurt so badly, but ABC eyewitnesses say that he approached the getaway car and possibly grabbed its door handle. When the car sped away, it led to the man hitting his head on another parked car.
On Wednesday afternoon, after analyzing surveillance cameras and soliciting tips from the public, the Oakland Police Department arrested two suspects in connection with the death. Information on those suspects’ identities is not currently available.
