(IBEXNews) – An off-duty NYPD cop accidentally drove a car into Jamaica Bay near the Rockaways — and was stripped of her gun and shield after authorities discovered she was in the vehicle with a known felon, sources told IBex News.

The cop, identified by sources as Police Officer Halima Hadire, was put on modified duty following the Wednesday night incident.

Police sources said Hadire, who is assigned to the 76th Precinct in Carroll Gardens, was disciplined because her passenger had a criminal record. NYPD officers are barred from knowingly associating with felons.

Hadire, 39, and the 42-year-old man were sitting in the car near the water line by Floyd Bennett Field about 8:45 p.m. when the vehicle lurched forward and fell into the water, police said.

Both Hadire and her passenger managed to get out of the car, described as a brand new Cadillac, before it submerged.

The pair was taken to Coney Island Hospital for a medical evaluation. Because of the foul weather and lack of visibility at night, an NYPD Scuba team flagged where the car sank so it could be removed at a later date, sources said.

NYPD brass ordered Hadire to be placed on modified duty after learning that her passenger was arrested multiple times for weapons possession — most recently in 2014 when Staten Island cops caught him with a sawed off shotgun, sources said.

No arrests were made in the Wednesday incident.

“The Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the incident,” an NYPD spokeswoman said.

An email to Hadire, a four-year veteran of the department, was not immediately returned.
